In a schoolroom in western Japan, a nine-year-old boy kneels on tatami mats, copying characters he does not want to copy. His legs have gone numb. His hands are stained with ink. The cicadas will not stop.
But his mind is elsewhere – five hundred years elsewhere, standing on a shore where the sea is still fighting, where arrows still rise, where a child-Emperor has not yet been taken into the water.
