What’s the best way to explore a new city?

Brazil, 4th October 1956. Two days after the president pointed at an empty plateau and promised a capital, a lorry drops a tired man from the backlands at a dusty survey camp. Nineteen-year-old chainman Sebastião greets him with beans, jokes and a grand tour of a city that doesn’t yet exist.

But Sebastião knows that leather hat. He knows that crooked finger. And the stranger, asking how best to explore a new city, has no idea who is answering.

As the first rains gather, twenty metres of chain stretch between two men and twelve unspoken years.
