Nelson, Lancashire. 1913. A young woman walks the dark streets at half-past three, tapping windows awake with a bamboo pole so the mill workers don’t lose their wages. Twopence a door. A hundred and nineteen doors. Tonight, she taps her own.
Standing before a suffragette meeting in a gaslit Temperance Hall, a knocker-up grips a lectern with white knuckles and says the thing she has never said aloud. About the fear. About the money. About the man in the doorway who has never once touched her.
She counts to ten. She waits. She listens for the window to come up.
