What’s a quote that perfectly describes your outlook on life?
Highgate Cemetery, London. August 1967. The clay is hard and a man is digging.
He is twenty-eight. He does not give his name. Six years turning the earth for the dead, and he has learned what the living do not expect: grief is mostly waiting, and kindness is mostly standing back.
A question reaches him sideways from a discarded magazine. He answers with five words heard on a transistor radio, spoken flat, without irony, and goes back to digging.
Nothing happens. Everything holds.
A monologue about ordinary labour, stubborn tenderness, and the grace of saying only what is true.
