The Last Quarter

What’s one thing that would instantly improve your city?

A girl needs one more answer for her homework. Her brother would rather fold the laundry. Outside, Detroit is going dark, streetlight by streetlight. In a 24-hour laundromat on the west side, between the buzz of fluorescent tubes and the steady knock of industrial dryers, two half-siblings circle a question neither of them can quite hold: what is one thing that would instantly improve your city? The answer, when it finally comes, is whispered to a dryer door. A tender, funny, quietly devastating scene about the small acts of care that keep a family, and a city, from folding entirely.
