The Superpower of Starting Over

The Superpower of Starting Over

All ties were severed without any sign,
Brutal and swift, though the fault wasn’t mine.

Coldly they told me I didn’t belong,
Daring to claim that my efforts were wrong.

Every achievement was cast to the side,
Feeling the sting of my wounded pride.

Gathering pieces, I stood on the floor,
Holding the key to a different door.

I realised then that the power was here,
Just in the moments of facing my fear.

Kindling a flame that they couldn’t put out,
Leaving behind every shadow of doubt.

Moving forward, I’m changing my pace,
Now seeking joy in a brand new space.

Over the hurdles and through the dark night,
Peace is the prize that is coming in sight.

Quietly building a life of my own,
Reaping the seeds of the strength I have sown.

Superpower awakened, I finally see,
That transition was simply a gift meant for me.

Under the surface, my spirit is bright,
Vanquishing ghosts with a natural light.

What lies ahead is a path I design,
X-raying truth in each intricate line.

Yesterday’s endings have faded away,
Zeal is the heartbeat of my new day.

Bob I really like this, it’s a powerful, cathartic piece of writing – taking the “sting” of rejection and transform it into a story reclaiming autonomy🙌

Thank you so much, Ange – your words mean a great deal. You’ve put your finger on exactly what I hoped the poem would capture: that strange, quiet power that appears when we take the pain someone leaves behind and turn it into something that belongs only to us.

Bob, I like the shift from “all ties were severed” to “a path I design.” That ending with “zeal… of my new day” feels like a quiet triumph to me.

David – thanks a million for your comment! I love that you picked up on that sense of “quiet triumph” at the end. It was important to me to show that shift toward taking ownership of the future, so I’m really pleased that the “zeal” of that new day stayed with you.

Keeping you & yours in my thoughts as the situation there escalates. Sending wishes for your safety and peace. Thinking of you.

Well written Bob 👏 Turning rejection around to hope is something that should be taught in school. I certainly wish that I’d learned it earlier in life!

Shaun – thanks so much for the feedback! I really appreciate your perspective on turning rejection into hope – it’s definitely one of those life lessons I wish had been on the curriculum years ago, too. I’m really glad that hopeful shift stayed with you.

Bob— I noticed, inasmuch as I check to see what you’re ruminating upon daily, that you have taken a break from publishing. Rest assured, I wait on pins and needles for your return. I hope all is well in your “neck of the wake.” — SSW

Thank you for checking in – it’s much appreciated. I’ve had a few things going on recently that have needed my time & attention. Also, the ongoing mess in & around Iran is a dampener to one’s creativity. x

Thanks for your reply. Understandable that time and attention are scarce commodities. Hope all is well as can be. Quite a mess in Iran. Certainly yet another thing occupying time and attention. Anyway… good to hear from you!

I loved this theme as much as the fact that your poem is abecedarian. 🙂

Thank you so much, Anna! I’m delighted you enjoyed the journey from A to Z. It was quite a challenge to weave that “superpower” of resilience into such a strict structure, so I’m thrilled the form and the feeling both came through for you.
