The Weekly Fib

The Weekly Fib

What lie do you tell yourself to get through the week?

Monday morning, I tell myself a tale:
That people mean the words they send by mail,
That “Let’s catch up soon!” isn’t just politeness,
That colleagues share my passion, not just brightness
Of their own advancement, climbing up the ladder –
But wait, what if their dreams actually matter?

Tuesday’s lie arrives in softer hues:
That everyone’s not simply playing ruse,
That kindness might exist without a motive,
That generosity can be emotive –
Though probably they’re angling for something later…
Unless? Perhaps? Could strangers be creator
Of goodness just because? How curious, that.

Wednesday whispers: “Give them benefit of doubt!”
(My cynical brain responds with: “Figure out
The angle first.”) But curiosity’s a beast
That won’t lie down – it interrupts at least
Three times an hour, asking: “What if you’re wrong?
What if the world’s less mercenary, more song?”

By Thursday I’m exhausted from the fight
Between my distrust and my pure delight
In wondering why that barista smiled at me –
Was it for tips? Or simple courtesy?
Or joy? (Imagine! Joy without condition!)
My cynicism calls this superstition.

Friday’s fib’s the biggest one of all:
That next week I won’t build this same tall wall,
That I’ll believe in human goodness purely,
Trust motivations, see intentions surely –
But curiosity just grins and winks:
“Or maybe, love, investigate what makes them tick?”

The weekend comes, my lies can finally rest.
I don’t know which belief serves me the best:
To doubt the world or wonder at its workings,
To spot the game or marvel at its quirkings –
So here’s my truth beneath the weekly fiction:
I’m gloriously trapped between contradiction.

pretty cool. I liked it and never considered it like this but I think I went through most of that daily while working. Not so much now but sure back in the day this rings very true.

How marvellous you’ve left that daily battle in the past!
(The workplace is where Cynicism grows so very fast.)
I’m glad my little verses rang a bell from days of yore,
When wondering “is this real?” was such a heavy, constant chore.
Here’s to looking back at all the fibs we used to spin –
And knowing that eventually, the Truth (and you!) did win.

You ask for velvet fictions to help the hours fly?
To hush the noisy sceptic with a soft and soothing lullaby?
Then here you are: “The plan will work exactly as you dreamed,”
“And things are truly, deeply good – not merely how they seemed.”
Drink it up like cocoa, friend, and let the doubt subside,
(At least until your curiosity wonders what they hide!)

Yes, it is difficult for all of us to discern the motives of others — to assess them w/o bias, through a lens cleared of our own emotions. In a world full of avarice and corruption, where scams about, it is challenge not to become jaded. We need to protect ourselves. Yet, we may be cutting ourselves off from genuine human connection.

Ah, you’ve sketched the tightrope walk we balance on each day!
Between the urge to shut the door and urge to come out to play.
The scams are real, the avarice is shouting in the street,
(My inner cynic nods his head and checks the balance sheet).

But you are right – if armour plates are buckled on too tight,
We might block out a genuine soul just looking for a light.
To keep safe yet stay open is the hardest trick of all –
Let’s hope we find the balance point before we take a fall!
