Welcome, Betty. I imagine few people today recognise your name, though they use your inventions daily. How does that feel, looking back from 2025?

Well, it’s hardly surprising, is it? When programming became prestigious work instead of women’s work, the history books were rewritten accordingly. But you know, I’ve always been more interested in solving problems than receiving credit. Though I must say, watching programmers today struggle with debugging whilst being completely unaware they’re using my breakpoint system… there’s a certain irony there.

Let’s start at the beginning. You were born in 1917, and like many women of your generation, you faced immediate barriers. Tell me about that mathematics professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Yes, on the very first day, the professor looked at me and said, “Wouldn’t you be better off at home raising children?” Just like that. No consideration of my mathematical ability or academic record – simply the fact that I was female meant I was wasting everyone’s time, including my own.

How did you respond?

I switched to journalism. You see, that’s how these barriers work – they’re not always iron walls. Sometimes they’re subtle redirections that make you question your own judgment. Journalism seemed practical. It was one of the few fields where women could have careers, and it satisfied my desire to travel and explore. Mathematics felt… forbidden.

But mathematics found you again during the war.

The war changed everything. Suddenly, the country needed every capable mind, regardless of gender. The Moore School of Engineering was hiring women to work as “computers” – human calculators computing ballistic trajectories by hand. Complex differential equations, day and night, six days a week. We were doing the mathematical work that those male professors assumed we couldn’t handle.

Then came ENIAC – the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. How were you selected for the programming team?

Six of us were chosen from the human computers: myself, Kay McNulty, Marlyn Wescoff, Ruth Lichterman, Betty Jean Jennings, and Fran Bilas. They needed people who understood both the mathematics and the painstaking precision required for complex calculations. What they didn’t anticipate was that we’d essentially have to invent computer programming from scratch.

Let’s discuss that invention process. For our readers who work with modern development environments, can you walk us through what programming ENIAC actually involved – step by step?

Right. Imagine you have a room-sized machine with 18,000 vacuum tubes, 6,000 switches, and hundreds of cables. No keyboard, no screen, no programming language. To program ENIAC, you first had to understand the mathematical problem completely – break it down into every minute step.

Then you’d design what we called “setup sheets” – essentially blueprints showing which cables connected to which sockets, which switches needed to be in which positions. Each of the 40 panels had different functions: arithmetic units, memory units, control units. You had to route the data flow through the machine manually.

That sounds incredibly physical.

It was. We’d spend days crawling around inside this massive machine, connecting cables, setting switches. The machine was parallel – multiple operations could happen simultaneously – so you had to understand timing relationships. If one calculation took four machine cycles and another took one, you had to account for that synchronisation.

And debugging? You invented the breakpoint – how did that work on ENIAC?

Ah, yes. The breakpoint was born of necessity. When a program wasn’t working correctly, you needed to examine the machine’s state at specific points. On ENIAC, program flow was controlled by cables connecting different units. To create a breakpoint, you literally removed a cable at the point where you wanted the program to stop. The machine would halt, and you could examine the accumulator values, check the data flow.

We called it “breaking the point” in the program – hence, breakpoint. It was quite literal. Modern debuggers with their sophisticated breakpoint systems are elegant descendants of that crude but effective technique.

Your colleague Betty Jean Jennings once said you “solved more problems in your sleep than other people did awake.” Were you really a night-time problem-solver?

They did joke about that. I was a night owl, always have been. But there was something about the quiet hours that helped me think through complex logical structures. I’d go to bed with a programming problem, and often wake up with the solution. The human mind continues working even when you’re not conscious of it. I suspect many programmers today experience the same thing.

Now, let’s address the discrimination head-on. You and your colleagues were classified as “subprofessionals” whilst men with identical qualifications were deemed “professionals.” How did that affect you?

It was systematic devaluation. We had mathematics degrees, we were solving problems that required advanced mathematical knowledge, we were essentially inventing the field of computer programming – and yet we were paid less and classified as support staff.

The government justified it as cost-saving, but the real reason was simple: if women were doing the work, it couldn’t be that important. The moment programming became recognised as intellectually demanding and crucial to the industry, it was redefined as men’s work.

You’ve mentioned that ENIAC was initially classified. How did that secrecy affect your work?

For months, we could only work with blueprints and wiring diagrams. We weren’t allowed to see the actual machine because we lacked security clearance. Can you imagine? We were programming a computer we’d never seen, working from technical drawings alone. When we were finally cleared to enter the room with ENIAC, it was… overwhelming. This massive, humming electronic brain that we’d been programming blind.

After ENIAC, you worked on UNIVAC and created the Sort Merge Generator. Can you explain what that was and why it was revolutionary?

The Sort Merge Generator was my answer to a fundamental question: could we make computers write programs? I used playing cards – literally, a deck of playing cards – to develop decision trees for binary sorting algorithms. The system could take specifications for data files and automatically generate the code for sorting and merging operations.

Grace Hopper called it “the first step to tell us that we could actually use a computer to write programs.” It included what I believe was the first implementation of virtual memory – automatic overlay management without programmer intervention. The machine could write its own code.

That sounds like an early compiler.

It was a precursor, yes. People focus on Grace’s A-0 system, but my Sort Merge Generator demonstrated the concept first: high-level specifications automatically translated into machine operations. It showed that programming could be automated, that we could build tools to make programming itself more efficient.

You also worked on the C-10 instruction set for BINAC with John Mauchly. How significant was that?

The C-10 instruction set was revolutionary because it used mnemonic codes instead of pure machine language. Instead of remembering numerical operation codes, programmers could use letters: “A” for add, “B” for bring. It seems obvious now, but at the time, it was the bridge between machine language and human-readable programming languages. Every modern programming language traces back to concepts we developed for C-10.

Later, you worked with Grace Hopper on COBOL and FORTRAN standards. What was that collaboration like?

Grace was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. We shared a vision of making computers more accessible, more human-friendly. COBOL was particularly important because it was designed for business applications, not just scientific computing. We wanted a language that could express business logic in something approaching English sentences.

Working on FORTRAN standards was equally crucial. We were establishing the foundations that would govern how programmers worked for decades. Every decision about syntax, structure, data types – these would affect millions of future programmers.

Let me challenge you on something. Critics today might argue that the gender discrimination you faced, whilst unfair, was simply reflective of the times. How do you respond?

That’s precisely the attitude that perpetuates these problems. “Reflective of the times” suggests inevitability, as if discrimination were a natural law rather than a deliberate choice.

The war proved women could do this work excellently. We were demonstrably good at it. The decision to exclude us afterward wasn’t about competence – it was about control and prestige. When programming became valuable, it was systematically recoded as masculine work.

You’re saying it was conscious exclusion, not unconscious bias?

Both. The individual biases were often unconscious, but the institutional patterns were absolutely deliberate. Job descriptions suddenly required “masculine” traits like “logical thinking” and “mathematical ability” – traits we’d demonstrated but which were redefined as naturally male. Recruitment shifted to male-dominated universities. Salary structures were adjusted to favour supposedly male skills.

What do you make of the tech industry today? Has anything really changed?

The surface has changed. There are more women in tech today than in the 1950s and 1960s. But the fundamental patterns persist. Women are still underrepresented in senior technical roles, still face questions about their competence, still encounter the subtle barriers I faced.

The tools are more sophisticated, but the core challenges remain: proving competence repeatedly, fighting for recognition, balancing family expectations with career ambitions. The difference is that today, we pretend it’s a solved problem.

Every software developer today uses debugging techniques you pioneered, yet most have never heard your name. What would you want them to know?

That programming wasn’t inevitable, wasn’t naturally masculine, wasn’t something that emerged fully formed from male genius. It was created by people – many of them women – who solved problems step by step, breakthrough by breakthrough.

When you set a breakpoint, remember that a woman invented that technique by literally pulling cables out of a massive machine. When you use a compiler, remember that women showed computers could write their own programs. When you sort data automatically, remember the playing cards I used to develop those algorithms.

You mentioned playing cards. Can you elaborate on that technique?

Ah, yes. For the Sort Merge Generator, I needed to visualise decision trees for binary sorting. So I used a standard deck of playing cards – 52 cards, each representing a data element. I’d physically sort them using different algorithms, mapping out every decision point, every comparison, every data movement.

It was tactile programming, if you will. By manipulating physical objects, I could understand the logical structures needed for automated sorting. The computer had to make the same decisions I was making with the cards, so I mapped every step into machine operations.

That’s fascinating – using physical objects to design abstract algorithms.

Exactly. Programming in those days required that kind of creativity. We didn’t have high-level languages or sophisticated development environments. We had to bridge the gap between human thinking and machine operations using whatever tools we could find – playing cards, pencil and paper, our own logical reasoning.

Looking at modern software development, what would most surprise you about how the field evolved?

The speed, certainly. Modern computers process information at rates we couldn’t have imagined. But what really strikes me is how much programming has become democratised. Languages like Python or JavaScript that let people express complex ideas relatively simply – that’s exactly what we were working toward.

What disappoints me is how many fundamental problems remain unsolved. We still struggle with software reliability, with making systems truly user-friendly, with bridging the gap between human intentions and machine execution. The tools are more sophisticated, but the core challenges persist.

You’ve been called a founder of software engineering. How do you define that field?

Software engineering is about applying systematic, disciplined approaches to programming. It’s recognising that writing code isn’t just about making machines work – it’s about creating reliable, maintainable, comprehensible systems.

When we developed breakpoints, we weren’t just debugging individual programs. We were establishing the principle that programs must be observable and controllable. When I created the Sort Merge Generator, I wasn’t just automating one task – I was demonstrating that programming itself could be systematised and automated.

What mistakes do you think modern programmers make?

They take too much for granted. Modern development environments are so sophisticated that programmers can work without understanding the underlying machine operations. That’s wonderful for productivity, but dangerous for problem-solving.

When something goes wrong at a fundamental level, you need to understand what’s actually happening inside the machine. That deep understanding – of memory management, of data flow, of timing relationships – that’s often missing today.

Let me ask about a mistake you made. What’s your biggest professional misjudgment looking back?

I trusted institutions too much in the early years. I believed that competence would be recognised, that good work would speak for itself. I didn’t understand how systematically the field would be masculinised.

If I could do it again, I’d have fought harder for recognition, documented my contributions more thoroughly, insisted on co-authorship of papers. The technical work was brilliant, but I was naive about the political dimensions of academic and industrial recognition.

Contemporary critics might argue that focusing on historical gender discrimination distracts from current technical challenges. Your response?

That’s exactly backwards. Understanding how discrimination shaped the field’s development is crucial for solving current technical challenges. If we’d maintained the diversity of perspectives from computing’s early days, if we hadn’t systematically excluded entire groups of people, imagine what problems we might have solved by now.

Diversity isn’t political correctness – it’s practical necessity. Different backgrounds bring different approaches to problem-solving. The tech industry’s ongoing diversity challenges aren’t separate from its technical challenges; they’re directly connected.

What advice would you give to women entering tech today?

First, understand that you belong here. Computing wasn’t created by men and handed down to women as a favour. Women were there from the beginning, creating the fundamental concepts and techniques.

Second, document everything. Keep records of your contributions, insist on proper attribution, make your work visible. The system won’t naturally recognise your achievements – you have to fight for that recognition.

Third, support other women. The exclusion of women from computing wasn’t accidental – it was systematic. Overcoming it requires systematic action as well.

And for men in tech?

Learn the real history. Understand that many of the foundational concepts you use daily were created by women. That knowledge should inform how you think about women’s capabilities and contributions today.

Also, recognise that exclusion is still happening. It’s more subtle than telling women to go home and raise children, but it’s persistent. You have the power to interrupt those patterns – in hiring, in project assignments, in recognition and promotion.

Finally, how do you want to be remembered?

As someone who solved problems. The breakpoint, the Sort Merge Generator, the C-10 instruction set – these weren’t abstract theoretical contributions. They were practical solutions to real programming challenges.

But more than that, I want to be remembered as proof that programming was never naturally masculine. It was creative work that required logical thinking, mathematical ability, and systematic problem-solving – qualities that have no gender. The early history of computing proves that beyond any doubt.

Any final thoughts for programmers using your innovations today?

Remember that every tool you use, every technique you employ, was created by someone. Programming didn’t emerge from nowhere – it was built by people solving problems one breakthrough at a time. Many of those people were women who have been written out of the official history.

When you use a debugger, when you rely on a compiler, when you implement a sorting algorithm, remember the human creativity that made those tools possible. And remember that the next breakthrough might come from someone who looks nothing like the stereotype of a programmer – just as the original breakthroughs did.

For memory allocation problems, I used to arrange pencils on my desk in different patterns. Each pencil represented a memory location, and I’d physically move them around to understand how data flowed through the machine. When working on timing relationships between different ENIAC units, I’d use a metronome and tap out the sequences with my fingers – one finger for each processing unit. You could actually hear the rhythm of the computation that way.

For complex branching logic, I’d draw decision trees on large sheets of paper and then trace through them with coloured pencils – red for one path, blue for another. But my favourite technique was using everyday objects as data elements. Buttons for sorting algorithms, coins for memory management, even sugar cubes for stack operations. I’d physically manipulate them to understand what the machine needed to do logically.

The brilliant thing about tactile methods is they force you to confront every single step. When you’re moving a button from one pile to another, you can’t skip over the details the way you might with pure abstraction. You have to think: “How does the machine know which button to pick? What happens if two buttons need moving simultaneously? How do I handle the case where there are no buttons left?”

You ask whether modern developers lose something important – absolutely, yes. Digital abstractions are powerful, but they can mask fundamental realities. When everything happens inside the computer, it’s easy to forget that data has physical reality, that operations take time, that resources are finite.

I once spent three days debugging a program that worked perfectly in my head but failed on the machine. The problem? I hadn’t accounted for the time it took signals to travel between units. Physical manipulation would have forced me to consider that delay.

My advice? Keep a deck of cards at your desk. Use building blocks for system architecture. Draw flowcharts by hand before you code them. The computer doesn’t care about your elegant abstractions – it only understands the concrete steps you give it. Physical methods help you think like the machine thinks, step by tedious step.

The best programmers I’ve known could always explain their algorithms using physical metaphors. If you can’t sort a deck of cards by hand using your algorithm, how can you expect a machine to sort data using it?

If you and your colleagues had been able to publish papers and present at conferences from the beginning, how do you think the entire trajectory of computer science as an academic discipline might have evolved differently? Would we have seen more women remain in the field?

Roman, that’s a question that’s haunted me for decades. The secrecy wasn’t just inconvenient – it was catastrophic for the field’s development.

If we’d been able to publish from the start, computer science would have emerged as a genuinely interdisciplinary field. We had mathematicians, physicists, engineers, and logicians all working together, solving problems that had never been solved before. That collaborative, problem-focused approach would have become the academic standard.

Instead, what happened? By the time ENIAC was declassified, the narrative had already been established: brilliant male engineers had invented computing. The universities picked up that story and built computer science departments around it. They recruited from engineering and physics programmes – predominantly male fields – rather than from mathematics, where women had stronger representation.

We would have had Betty Jean Jennings as Professor of Computer Science at Penn by 1950. Marlyn Wescoff would have been heading research labs. Kay McNulty would have been training the next generation of programmers. The entire academic pipeline would have been different.

But more than that – the technical development would have been accelerated by decades. We were already thinking about automated programming, about making computers user-friendly, about debugging methodologies. If we’d been publishing, collaborating with other institutions, building on each other’s work openly… my Sort Merge Generator could have sparked a whole research programme into automatic programming five years earlier. Instead of Grace and I working in isolation, we could have had research teams at multiple universities pushing these concepts forward. The compiler revolution might have happened in the early 1950s instead of the late 1950s.

And yes, absolutely, more women would have remained in the field. Academia provides a certain protection against the cruder forms of discrimination. If women had been established as professors, as department heads, as research leaders from the beginning, it would have been much harder to redefine programming as naturally masculine work.

Instead, we got this absurd historical revision where programming supposedly required special “male” traits like logical thinking and mathematical ability – traits we’d been demonstrating brilliantly for years! If our work had been visible from the start, that revisionist narrative would have been impossible.

The real tragedy isn’t just what happened to us individually. It’s what happened to the field. Computing lost decades of diverse perspectives, innovative approaches, and collaborative problem-solving methods. We’re still paying the price for that loss today.

You worked during an era when failure meant physically rewiring massive machines – the stakes and costs of mistakes were enormous compared to today’s rapid iteration cycles. How did this high-consequence environment shape your approach to problem-solving and quality assurance? Do you think modern developers’ ability to quickly prototype and fail fast is actually making us less rigorous programmers?

Tina, you’ve identified something crucial that modern developers rarely experience. When rewiring ENIAC took three days and a mistake could damage expensive vacuum tubes, you developed what I call “mental discipline” – the ability to trace through every logical step before you ever touched the machine.

We had no choice but to be methodical. Before setting a single switch, I’d work through the entire program on paper – every calculation, every data path, every timing relationship. I’d check my logic five different ways, have colleagues review my setup sheets, then check again. We called it “desk checking,” and it was absolutely ruthless.

That high-consequence environment taught us that prevention was infinitely more valuable than correction. Modern developers can afford to be sloppy because fixing mistakes is cheap and fast. They write code, run it, see what breaks, fix it, repeat. That’s not inherently wrong, but it develops lazy thinking habits.

When every change required physical rewiring, you learned to think in terms of invariants – conditions that must always be true. You designed defensive programming into the very structure of your algorithms. You couldn’t just add a quick patch later; the solution had to be right from the beginning.

But here’s what’s interesting: that rigorous approach actually made us more creative, not less. When you’re forced to think through every possibility upfront, you discover edge cases and optimisation opportunities that rapid iteration often misses. Some of my best algorithmic insights came from those painstaking analysis sessions.

The emotional aspect… well, that’s more complex. The technical pressure was actually liberating in some ways. When you’re debugging a machine that represents months of national resources, gender becomes irrelevant. The vacuum tubes don’t care whether you’re male or female – they either work or they don’t.

The real emotional toll came from the human systems, not the technical ones. Watching male colleagues get credit for our work, being excluded from technical discussions, having our contributions minimised – that was far more exhausting than any programming challenge.

But I think modern rapid iteration, whilst productive, has created a different kind of stress. When you can change code instantly, there’s pressure to solve problems immediately, to always be moving fast. We had enforced thinking time – those three days of rewiring gave you space to consider alternative approaches.

My advice? Bring back some of that rigorous upfront thinking. Not because modern tools require it, but because complex problems still benefit from deep analysis before you start typing. The best code I ever wrote was code I thought through completely before implementing.

Your Sort Merge Generator included early virtual memory concepts decades before they became standard. This suggests you were thinking about computational problems that wouldn’t become widespread until much later. What other technical challenges or solutions did you envision in the 1950s that the industry wasn’t ready for? Were there innovations you wanted to pursue but couldn’t due to hardware limitations or institutional constraints?

Lloyd, you’ve hit upon something that frustrated me for decades – being constantly ahead of what the industry was ready to understand or implement.

The virtual memory concepts in the Sort Merge Generator were just the tip of the iceberg. I was envisioning what we’d now call object-oriented programming as early as 1952. I wanted to create reusable code modules – what I called “program units” – that could be combined like building blocks. Each unit would handle its own data and operations, hiding the internal complexity from other units.

But the hardware limitations were crushing. ENIAC had perhaps 200 words of internal storage. You couldn’t afford the overhead of modular programming when every instruction had to be accounted for. So I had to settle for the Sort Merge Generator’s automatic overlay system – at least that showed programs could manage their own memory usage.

I was also thinking about what you’d now call artificial intelligence, though we didn’t use that term. I wanted to create programs that could analyse their own performance and automatically optimise their algorithms. Imagine: a sorting routine that could detect the characteristics of incoming data and switch between different sorting methods accordingly.

The institutional constraints were often worse than the hardware ones. I proposed developing standardised debugging interfaces – essentially what became integrated development environments – but management saw no commercial value in “programming tools.” They wanted applications, not infrastructure.

I also envisioned distributed computing networks decades before anyone took them seriously. Why should one machine handle all processing when you could coordinate multiple machines? But the communications technology wasn’t there, and more importantly, the conceptual framework didn’t exist. People thought of computers as giant calculators, not as interconnected systems.

Perhaps most frustratingly, I could see that programming languages needed to evolve toward natural language processing. I wanted to create systems where you could describe problems in something approaching plain English, and the computer would translate that into executable code. Grace and I discussed this extensively during our COBOL work, but the processing power simply wasn’t available.

The irony is that many of these “new” innovations of the 1970s and 1980s were things we’d been discussing in the early 1950s. Time-sharing systems, interactive programming environments, automated testing frameworks – we knew what was needed. We just couldn’t build it yet.

What sustained me was the absolute certainty that computing would transform everything. I could see that these machines wouldn’t just calculate – they’d reshape how humans work, communicate, even think. That vision kept me pushing forward, even when the immediate applications seemed mundane.

The real tragedy is how much faster progress might have been if more of us had been allowed to pursue these advanced concepts instead of being sidelined as the field masculinised itself.

Looking back at your career, you seemed to navigate between pure technical innovation and the political realities of being a woman in a male-dominated field. I’m curious about the emotional toll – how did you maintain your passion for the technical work whilst simultaneously fighting for recognition and respect? What sustained you during the periods when your contributions were being minimised or ignored?

Amelia, that’s perhaps the most difficult question you could ask me, because it gets to the heart of something I spent decades trying to balance – and I’m not sure I always succeeded.

The emotional toll was… constant. Imagine loving something deeply – the pure logic of programming, the satisfaction of solving impossible problems – whilst simultaneously watching that same thing be used to diminish you. Every day, I had to prove I belonged in rooms where mediocre men were simply assumed to belong.

What sustained me was stubborn bloody-mindedness, frankly. I refused to let their limitations become my limitations. When they said women couldn’t think logically, I’d go home and design more elegant algorithms. When they excluded me from technical meetings, I’d solve the problems they were struggling with and present solutions they couldn’t ignore.

But I won’t pretend it didn’t cost me. There were nights I’d lie awake furious – not at the technical challenges, but at having to waste mental energy defending my right to tackle those challenges. Some of my male colleagues could focus purely on the work. I had to focus on the work AND the politics of being allowed to do the work.

The hardest moments were when I started doubting myself. When you’re constantly told you don’t belong, part of you begins to wonder if maybe they’re right. Maybe I was just lucky. Maybe my successes were flukes. That internal voice was sometimes more damaging than any external criticism.

What saved me was the work itself. Debugging ENIAC, creating the Sort Merge Generator, developing those instruction sets – the problems didn’t care about my gender. When a program worked, it worked. When an algorithm was elegant, it was elegant. The machine gave me objective validation that human institutions denied me.

I also learned to find joy in small victories. When a younger programmer – male or female – used a technique I’d developed, even if they didn’t know who created it, that was success.
